The switched Long Distance Service uses different technology for establishing a connection to the destination number. This is the most reliable service that you can get, and usually the rates for this service are a little higher than those of Calling cards.
When you sign up for Long Distance service, you will need to change (or switch) your Long Distance provider. It usually takes several days before you have the service active on your line. Calling cards work instantly after you purchase them.
Once you have the service established, you will be dialing directly from your phone, unlike Calling cards, where you need to dial an access number and Authorization code (PIN) to use the service.
Switched Long Distance service only works for those lines that it was activated and it doesn't work from cell phones. Calling cards usually work from any touch tone phone.
TPV stands for "Third Party Verification".
This is an automatic system that records your voice while giving us permission to switch your Long Distance service. It acts as a signature on a Long Distance service agreement.
If you are signing up online, you will need to do a TPV, by dialing the number shown on the form and following the instruction. For customers that sign up over the phone, the TPV will be done with the assistance of our representative.
No. Currently we can sign up customer only from the continental 48 states.
No. Currently FCC rules state that Long Distance service includes both out-of-state calls and international calls. This means that when you switch your Long Distance service, you will switch both out-of-state and international services.
If you have some kind of "Unlimited calls" deal with your local phone company, you will not be able to just add international calls. You will have to either switch both out-of-state and international service to us or not switch at all.
One solution to this is to call us and ask about getting this service without switching. In this case, after you sign up, you will be dialing a 1010 number and you will receive a monthly bill ad usual. We will not be switching your service.
Another solution is to use a prepaid service. Our Peanuts LD service is one of the most popular services in this sense.

Toll free numbers allow the cost of a call to be charged to the party that receives the call. For the party that places the call, there will be no charge.
Toll free numbers are usually used by businesses to allow their customers to reach the company free of toll charges.
When a call is placed to a Toll free number, the signal is received by the carrier and is instantly transferred to a pre-selected "terminating number" or "ring-to number".
There are currently no billing fees for our service.
Yes, this option is available. You will receive more instructions with your first bill.
Besides rate per minute, you will see:
- Federal Tax - 3%
- State and Local Taxes - whatever percentage is specified by your local government
- Federal Universal Service Charge - changing quarterly. At this time 10.5% as decided by FCC
First of all, make sure you are dialing the correct destination number:
- For International calls dial 011 + Country code + City code + Phone Number;
- For calls within/to USA, Canada and the Caribbean dial 1 + Area code + Phone Number
- Check your number and make sure you are dialing the correct Country and City code.
Second, make sure that you still have our service on your line. You can do this either by dialing the 1 700 test number:
- For all plans on PNG: 1 700 555 4141. The message should be: "Thank you for choosing Qwest Communication. Q-7"
You can also call your local phone company and verify that your long distance carrier is still PNG respectively.
If you still experience problems, try to understand if the problem is not with the destination number - for example, getting a message in the language of the destination country. In that case try calling at a different time of the day.
If nothing helps, please call us at 617-489-5952 and have the following items ready:
- The result when you called the 700 test number
- A recent example of a call when you experienced the problem - time and full destination number
- The result of that call - messages, signals etc.
